First Season Care For Your Bareroot Rose

There's nothing quite like the first season with your new rose! When those warm spring days finally arrive and the sun coaxes your plant out of its winter nap, magic starts to happen. You'll see it fill out and notice when those first buds form. Watching those first blooms open is so exciting! We've pulled together some tips below to help you keep your beauties thriving flush after flush.

WATER - A general guideline is water deeply twice a week while they develop their root systems.  Always adjust based on your soil type, heat and rainfall.

FERTILIZE - Do not use fertilizer until after the first flush of blooms. If possible, only use organic fertilizers as needed during the first year.

MULCH - After watering, you can apply a 2” layer of mulch around the base reaching to the width of the canopy.  For mulch, you can use garden compost, well-rotted manure or other recommended products.

DEADHEAD - After each flush, prune the spent flower head to the first set of 5 leaflets, while creating a rounded and balanced shape as you go. This will promote faster, stronger reblooming.

SPRAY - Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and choose a dry, possibly overcast day, or a morning or evening.

CANADIAN & NORTHERN STATE CLIMATES - Don’t fertilize your roses after Labour Day.  Avoid pruning your roses in the fall.  After a few consistent nights of frosts, mound the base of the rose with good mulch or garden soil for extra protection.
