If you've landed on this page wondering where our shop went, you're in the right place. We'll explain exactly why we close seasonally, what's happening at the nursery while ordering is closed, and most importantly: how to be first in line when we reopen in the fall.
Every year, from mid-March through mid-Fall, we close our online rose shop. Not because we're resting, but because your roses are busy growing!
Why We Close From Mid-March to Mid-Fall
Bare root roses, the kind we specialize in, have a very specific shipping window. They can only be safely dug, shipped, and planted when they are fully dormant. Once spring arrives and the canes begin to bud, shipping bare root plants risks a transplant shock that most roses won't appreciate. In our experience, this shock will cause the rose to have a difficulty starting to grow.
Rather than ship containerized roses year-round, we made a deliberate choice: we only sell what we grow best, during the window it can be shipped safely. That means every plant that arrives at your door is primed and ready to thrive.
Common Questions at This Time of Year
Can I order now for spring planting?
What if I need a rose for a summer event or gift?
Will you have the same varieties when you reopen?
I just received my roses. Help!
Why not just sell potted roses year-round?
What Happens on the Nursery During the Growing Season
Far from quiet, the growing season is our busiest time. Here's what's happening between now and Fall:
Mar – May Roses wake up and begin their full-season of growth. From planting understock for summer grafting, to topping the roses we grafted last summer, to production planning and reaching out to hybridizers for new test varieties, Spring is our most exciting time at the nursery.
Jun – Aug The Peak growing season. Plants are pruned, fed, and monitored for disease. We trial new varieties from breeders, assess the season's crop, photograph, review and research each variety at peak bloom for the upcoming catalogue and website.
Sep – Oct Plants begin going dormant. We dig, grade, and prepare inventory. The shop reopens mid-fall with fresh stock and new releases.
