'Peace', also known as Gioia, Gloria Dei, Madame Antoine Meilland®

This legendary hybrid tea unfurls very large blooms in yellow with rose pink petal edges that pale to buttery white, releasing a moderate fragrance of tea with pear notes. Peace was named The World's Favourite Rose and inducted into the World Hall of Fame. Winter hardy and ideal for statement plantings and beds. Bred by Francis Meilland® in France before World War II. To safeguard it during the conflict, budwood was secretly sent to growers in Italy, Germany, and the United States. It was introduced in 1942 in France as 'Madame Antoine Meilland®' and independently in 1945 under different names abroad: 'Gioia' in Italy, 'Gloria Dei' in Germany, and 'Peace' in the United States, without the growers knowing of one another's plans. This careful distribution ensured the rose's survival and worldwide fame, and it has since become a symbol of perseverance, hope, and reconciliation worldwide.

More About Peace

Peace opens from bulbous, greenish yellow-pink buds borne mostly solitary, revealing very large, deeply cupped blooms in yellow with rose pink petal edges. As the very double flowers mature, they open gently with delicate reflexing petals, their colour paling to soft buttery white. Moderately fragrant with a wonderful perfume of tea layered with pear notes, these eternally loved blooms bring both shifting colour and refined elegance to the garden.

Growing Details

Peace forms an upright shrub reaching 4.5' × 3', thriving in CA Zones 6+ | USDA 5+ and beyond. Clad in green, leathery foliage with a semi-glossy finish, this continuous blooming hybrid tea shows minor fungal susceptibility in some growing areas. Ideal for statement plantings and beds where its very large, historic blooms can be appreciated.
